Surgical Weight Loss Support Group 

Every Monday except the fifth Monday
of the month, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Support meetings for patients who have undergone surgical intervention for treatment of clinically severe obesity. Any individual who is considering having weight-loss surgery is also welcome. Meetings are conducted by a
clinical psychologist.

The Young Onset Parkinson’s Support Group is designed to reach those who are newly diagnosed and under the age of 50. This group is designed to help patients and their families understand and cope with Parkinson’s symptoms. Maternity Orientation

Cost: Free

This orientation is designed for expectant parents and includes a PowerPoint tour of the maternity center, as well as information on pre-admission. 

Baby Care Basics

Cost: $25 per couple

Childbirth Series

Jan 3–24, 6:30 – 9 p.m.

Cost: $90 per couple 

This four-week series prepares the expectant mother and her partner for the laboring process, pain management options, hospital procedures, breathing and relaxation, cesarean birth and postpartum. Please call 1-800-MEMORIAL to pay the fee.

Parenting & Childbirth

The Journey: Cancer Support Group

First and third Thursday of every month

Noon – 1:30 p.m.

This is a special group for women at any stage of the cancer experience, as well as their female family members and friends. This group provides educational information, supportive discussion and embraces vital cancer issues and concerns. Held at 9900 Talbert Ave., Breast Center Conference Room 1A.

Transitions/Bereavement

First and third Wednesday of every month

6 – 7:30 p.m.

This group provides support for adults who have recently lost a loved one to cancer. Pre-registration is required. Please call the facilitator, Dani Daniels at (714) 378-7950 before attending. Held at 18111 Brookhurst St., Cancer Institute Conference Room, Suite 4300.

Prostate Support Group

First and third Tuesday of every month

6 – 7:30 p.m.

This group provides supportive discussion and educational information for prostate cancer patients, family members and friends. Held at 18111 Brookhurst St., Cancer Institute Conference Room, Suite 4300.

Screenings & Prevention

CT Lung Cancer Screening

Orange Coast Memorial offers a low-dose CT lung screening that may detect disease early, when treatment may be more successful. Medicare and the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recently released research from the National Lung Screening Trial showing that screening high-risk individuals may reduce cancer deaths by 20 percent. •  Age between 55-77 years old 

•Tobacco smoking history of at least a pack of cigarettes per day for at least 30 years

• Currently smoking or have quit within the last 15 years

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause
of death in women over the age of 25. Orange Coast Memorial is dedicated to keeping your heart healthy with our Women’s Cardiac Health Program. We offer a comprehensive cardiac screening just for women, which includes:

• Complete medical and family history, and health risk assessment survey

• Blood pressure, weight, body mass index (BMI) and body fat analysis

• Cholesterol and blood sugar testing, electrocardiogram and ankle brachial index testing

• Personal plan and coordination of care

Breast Cancer: Prevention, Screening and Recent Research

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2016, about 246,660 women will be diagnosed with new cases of invasive breast cancer in the U.S. Join Medical Director of the MemorialCare Breast Center at Orange Coast Memorial and Long Beach Memorial, Homayoon Sanati, M.D., and Medical Director of Breast Imaging at the MemorialCare Breast Center at Orange Coast Memorial, Richard Reitherman, M.D., as they discuss prevention, the importance of mammograms and recent research for breast cancer.

Better Breathers Club

Cost: Free 

Orange Coast Memorial’s Better Breathers Club is a support group for people with chronic lung disease. This support group brings members together to learn skills to help manage their conditions and improve their quality of life. The Club is based on the American Lung Association’s guidelines. Loved ones are also welcome to attend. 

Smoking Cessation Classes – Sail Away from Smoking Towards Health

The MemorialCare Cancer Institute at Orange Coast Memorial is pleased to offer the American Lung Association’s Sail Away from Smoking Towards Health class. This eight-session course is taught by a certified facilitator, Robin Philips, RN, MSN, BSN, PHN, nurse navigator. Classes are based on the ALA’s guidelines.
